Eye See ... Eye Learn®
Eye See ... Eye Learn® is an innovative program that seeks to ensure comprehensive eye care for all school children and is just one of the ways that local eye doctors in British Columbia communities are helping youngsters, and it’s making all the difference.
Initiated in January 2014 by the BC Doctors of Optometry, the Eye See ... Eye Learn® effort is based on a program that first began in Alberta. It provides doctor-delivered eye health exams for all kindergarten students in participating school districts, and when indicated, prescription eyeglasses at no charge. As we all know, a child's vision influences subsequent school achievement as well as overall developmental success. Eye See ... Eye Learn® is one way to help identify and diagnose possible eye abnormalities, detect and treat vision problems and prescribe corrective lenses if needed.
Statistics show that an underlying vision problem exists in approximately 25 percent of school age children.
Maple Ridge Eye Care considers it a privilege to be a part of this program. Eye See ... Eye Learn® programs are currently underway in 19 school districts, including Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows, Mission and Langley. As members of the British Columbia Association of Optometrists, our eye doctors in Maple Ridge are all participating optometrists for the Eye See ... Eye Learn® program servicing Maple Ridge & Pitt Meadows (School District 42) schools.
Participating doctors offer their services free of charge to local school districts. If necessary, prescription eyeglasses are provided free of charge by affiliated corporations including 20/20 Accessory Source, Ltd., Essilor Vision Foundation and OGI Eyewear.
- Children currently in a Maple Ridge or Pitt Meadows kindergarten class who are eligible for this program will be given a "Parent Letter" that will act as a voucher for a free eye exam (at no charge to the parents) and a free pair of glasses. These letters are supplied by the schools and parents are required to bring this in during the child's eye exam.
- During the summer months, our office can provide the "Parent Letter" to families who wish to participate provided that they meet the qualifications of being in kindergarten in the 2019/2020 school year and in a participating school district. To provide proof that a child meets these requirements, parents need to bring in their child’s report card or a similar document.
- Prescriptions done by a non-BCAO Doctor of Optometry will not be eligible.

Service to the community is an important adjunct to our full-service practice at Maple Ridge Eye Care. We take our "extra-curricular" activities seriously and participate in a number of programs that benefit local citizens and community groups. All our efforts are dedicated to providing the best possible eye care, and we renew that pledge daily to every patient who walks through our doors.
*"Eye See ... Eye Learn"® and "Fribbit" are registered trade-marks of the Alberta Association of Optometrists. Only kindergarten children within participating school districts in BC are eligible to participate. Glasses are provided upon request of the participating Doctor of Optometry.
